Two Kitchens, One Highway: Occidental's Unusual Summer of 2026

Most small towns lose a beloved restaurant and spend a year staring at brown paper in the windows. Occidental just did the opposite. The village traded one restaurant for two, kept the chef couple everyone knew by first name, and picked up a Napa Valley toque in the exchange.

If you live here, you have already noticed the shuffle on Bohemian Highway. What is less obvious is how much else has landed alongside it. A boutique inn is quietly turning its dining room into a rotating chef's stage. The Occidental Center for the Arts has added a jazz festival to a calendar that was already thick with music. Sunday evenings under the redwoods now come with a ticketed lineup. For a village of a few blocks, that is a lot of new hardware to absorb in one season.

The Bohemian Highway Swap

The address most locals still associate with Hazel is 3782 Bohemian Highway. That is no longer where you go for Jim and Michele Wimborough's wood-fired dinners. Hazel is reopening a few doors down at 3688 Bohemian Hwy., moving into the former home of Barley & Hops, following a temporary closure at 3782. As of the most recent update from co-owner Michele Wimborough, there is no exact opening date yet, as the team is still navigating county approvals.

The Wimboroughs are not new arrivals trying on a small town. They opened Hazel in 2015, and Occidental has been their home ever since, the place where they raised their son Graham. The new space keeps the pieces regulars care about: two wood-fired ovens as the focus of an ever-changing menu, and Jim's rustic, Californian-Mediterranean cooking, plus Michele's pastry program.

The address they vacated has already been claimed. The longtime Occidental space that housed Hazel restaurant at 3782 Bohemian Highway is set to reopen as a white-tablecloth destination under chef James Millar. The concept is Bohemian Bistro, and the backing is unexpected. Millar, formerly chef de cuisine at the upscale Violetto in Napa Valley, has been tapped by Todd and Erica Kniess, the owners of the fast-growing Acme Burger chain. The team is planning a fine-dining prix-fixe menu and a selection of Russian River wines.

Two things about this pairing are worth sitting with. First, the Kniesses are not planning to run the floor. They do not plan to oversee daily operations; instead, they remain focused on their five existing fast-casual locations, with additional expansion in Sonoma County under consideration. Second, Bohemian Bistro is part of a broader county-wide moment. In one of the busiest opening seasons in recent years, more than 20 restaurants have opened or are slated to debut in 2026, and some restaurateurs point to a softening real estate market and easing rents as one reason behind the surge. Rents that let a Napa-trained chef commit to a fourteen-seat village is the kind of macro shift that arrives in Occidental as a specific menu on a specific block.

A Third Kitchen Enters the Picture

Two restaurants inside two hundred yards would already be a story. Then the Inn at Occidental added a third venue with a format the village has not seen before.

Local Table will introduce a new chapter in dining for the town of Occidental through a series of chef and restaurant residencies. Throughout the year, acclaimed local chefs and select restaurant teams will take over the kitchen at the Inn at Occidental for dedicated runs, bringing their own culinary perspective, loyal following, and distinct menus to West Sonoma County. In practice, that means the room at 3657 Church Street changes cuisines instead of changing owners. Each night, a local guest chef will bring a fresh menu celebrating diverse cuisines and the best of Sonoma County ingredients, from wood-fired pizzas to international flavors.

For a resident, the calculus is different from a regular restaurant. You are not deciding whether the new place is worth trying once. You are deciding whether to keep an eye on who is cooking this week.

Sunday Evenings in the Courtyard

The Inn's dining room is not the only thing operating on a rotating schedule. The Inn at Occidental is welcoming back its Sunset Concert Series for 2026, with live music filling the courtyard on select Sunday evenings as the sun sets over West Sonoma County. The lineup is regional rather than tribute-band filler. ESTERO brings together Sonoma County natives Eric Lindell and John Courage in a collaboration that blends roots music with a California soul sound, with the two artists joining forces after years of honing their voices independently. Late for the Train, another band on the calendar, plays the same festival circuit as Kate Wolf and Strawberry.

Tickets are not free, and residents should plan accordingly. Aggregated calendars list the Sunset Concert Series at the Inn at Occidental, 3657 Church St., on Sunday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m., in the $35 to $40 range.

Come November, the music does not stop, it moves indoors. Beginning in November, the music moves indoors to the cozy OX Wine Bar every Friday evening from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Hosted by local music promoter Drew Pearce, founder of the Secret Song Club, in collaboration with the Inn at Occidental, each gathering begins with an open mic featuring local songwriters, followed by a featured performer, with the OX Wine Bar pouring local wines, craft beer, and seasonal refreshments. On May 30, 2026 it hosted the Fourth Annual Occidental World Music & Dance Festival, with more than 40 sessions including performances, workshops, jams, drum circles, a musical instrument lending library, and a Celtic harp encounter. A jazz festival on top of a world music festival is a programming ambition most towns this size do not sustain.

What the Summer Adds Up To

The easy read on Occidental this year is that a restaurant moved. The more accurate read is that the village is quietly densifying its cultural life without touching its footprint. Two fine-dining kitchens on the same short stretch of Bohemian Highway, one of them run by a Napa-trained chef. A residency program next door that guarantees the dining lineup keeps changing. A concert series with a paid, curated bill instead of open patio music. And a second festival at the arts center that turns a shoulder-season September weekend into a destination date.

None of this shows up in a headline about Sonoma County dining. It shows up in whether you can walk to three different serious dinners on three consecutive Fridays without leaving town. In 2026, in Occidental, you can.
